LG launch new range of RESU solar batteries in Australia

    Korean giant LG Chem have picked Australia as the first country in the world in which to launch their new range of lithium-ion residential batteries – RESU Solar.

    At almost half, the South Korean company has the largest share of the market in Australia when it comes to grid-connected battery storage. LG Chem claim the new Residential Energy Storage Unit (RESU) low-voltage and high-voltage variants will be cheaper, smaller, lighter and offer more choice.

    Powerful performance for RESU Solar

    This new generation of batteries convert solar DC into AC with a variety of inverters, with the low-voltage (48-volt) models generating between 3.3 and 9.8kWh, and the high-voltage (400-volt) between 7 and 9.8kWh.

    Combine that with the new expansion kit, RESU Plus, and it’s possible to combine two of the low voltage RESU batteries together. The range of capacity thus moves in the low-voltage range from 3.3 to 19.6kWh.

    Better for the average home

    The new models are also suitable for outdoor installation, which is a major advantage over previous models. Typically, PV Inverters are restricted on where they go because of water, temperature or size. The new RESU solar models are waterproof, wind-proof and can operate in direct sunlight.

    Not only are the new batteries more suitable for outside installation, but they’re smaller and lighter too, with the RESU3.3 weighing in around the same as a home computer. This compact size and lightness mean that it can be easily installed by a single person, and thus reducing the price of home installations.

    With the introduction of the easy wall-mounted or floor-standing unit, the door is now open to more homes being able to switch to solar power systems. The RESU battery also offers a modular design, which allows the system to grow along with the household’s needs. If the homeowner chooses to expand the solar power system, then the capacity of the battery can also be adjusted accordingly.

    The new series of RESU solar batteries will be offered globally but will be launched in Australia first, as it remains the most attractive market for battery storage because of its high electricity prices, tariff structure, high levels of rooftop solar (now at 5GW) and of course, our abundance of sunshine.

    Although battery storage systems are an early adopter market, the industry is expected to explode in the next 12 months, especially with ending of the premium feed-in tariffs in some states at the end of the year. From next year, many houses will no longer receive significant tariffs to send unused energy back to the grid, and as a result, those homes would rather keep that energy for themselves.
